Etymology: From κέρχνος `raw voice, hoarseness' with the same variation as in χλωρηΐς adjunct of the nightingale (: χλωρός) a. o. (Chantraine Formation 345f.); also κέρχνη after the η- (ᾱ-) fem.; κεγχρηΐς etc. through metathesis?, but hardly after κέγχρος `millet'; see Thompson Birds s. κεγχρηΐς. DELG defends the connection with κέγχρος.
